PN-20 Maps versus Garmin Maps

Postby CMason » Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:56 pm

This shows a test we did using the same location:

1) The top row is what you get out of the box, including the free downloads, with the PN-20 and Topo USA 6.0 DVD

2) The second row shows the Garmin base map

3) The third row shows the Garmin topo software that you have to pay extra for.

A picture is worth a thousand...

I have wanted to invest in a handheld GPS for a couple of years or more. Garmin and Magellan seemed to be the most like choices, but after downloading their user manuals and checking out the maps that could be loaded, I just couldn't bring myself to spend the $$$.

Besides, I had an investment in DeLorme Topo XX software -- I've had all of the last 4 versions. The maps available to load onto the G & M handhelds were pathetic compared to the T3/4/5/6 maps I was used to studying while planning hiking expeditions out in mountains and deserts of the San Diego east county.

I had considered the blue logger and some sort of palm unit. But that seemed a bit awkward, and I didn't really need a palm for anything else.

And then a few weeks ago I received an unexpected email from DeLorme announcing the PN-20. I placed my order the same day -- sight unseen.

What a delight the PN-20 has been -- and thanks for posting those comparison shots. They brought back all of those memories of why this is my first GPS.

Thanks so much, for a great product with unsurpassed support,

Bob...

Are the red/white and grey/white lines in the PN-20 2nd and 4th screen shots trails, line draw images or what? The reason I ask is because I am mapping trails in the area where I ride horses and have cut a map with that area with my trails added in. The default thin grey lines representing these trails can be difficult to see at times, but haveing the trails show up like this would be very convenient. Color coding would also allow me to distiguish major trails (old road beds) from smaller side trails that are seldom used.

BTW, most of the trails I have mapped thus far were with a Garmin 76CS with the Garmin Topo maps. The PN-20 is a MAJOR improvement especially with the ADP's

Thanks,
Mark

Those are trails, from Topo data. The red candy-stripe trail is the Appalachian Trail.

I checked with Garmin. MountW's summit elev. varies by snow depth.
