Since mapshare has moved beyond SA2006, I'm posting this in Tips and Tricks now. I'd also like to get other people what they did to make Mapshare work better for them.
DeLorme should have provided a better explanation with Mapshare, but on the other hand it's not too hard to figure out. I've seen some wrong information posted (you can't save the map, etc), this post is to correct that misinformation.
Ive got 1600x1200 resolution on my laptop. My mapshares come out horrible when I view them at work on my 1152x864 monitor. Why? Lots of resizing and compression of the picture to get it to fit on the smaller monitor. That makes text look horrible.
Mapshare chooses it's initial picture based on your screen size when sending, and automatically resizes the picture to fit in whatever size browser window you have open when you click the link. Sending from a low-resolution screen (800x600) and viewing in a 1200x1600 with your browser at full screen will get you an unshrunk view. But sending a mapshare from a 1200x1600 maximized Street Atlas/Topo window, and viewing in an 800x600 screen with your browser only using half the screen will mean you can't read a thing.
I haven't seen a max resolution in the SA/Topo program, but you have SA2006's window to full screen whe you send it, it will look bad when you go to the link. Plain and simple, with monitor sizes the same and maximized Street Atlas/Topo sending, and maximized browers window receiving, the mapshare picture will be about 70% (my eyeball rough guess) of the sent size.
The Mapshare browser has the DeLorme links on the left, and Map Notes (that you type in) on the right. When you compress map-based text (town and road names), it does not look good.
When I minimize my DeLorme SA/Topo window to a smaller size and getting the view right before sending mapshare, it works better. Using Zoom of 150% helps as well. (Town names are bigger when sent, then look 'normal' when mapshare shrinks them).
Saving The Map
Despite reports, you can save the map. It's just a little slow. In Mozilla, I had an 8 second delay between "right click-save as" to the box popping up. Most times it's around 5 seconds. In Internet Explorer, you have to be a little more patient because you can mouse away and click somewhere else, and your first command gets lost.
!!! VERY IMPORTANT !!!
There's a lot of complaints about map quality as it resizes on the Mapshare in your browser. See the above part where I mention the bigger your screen is when you send it, the worse it looks when it displays on Mapshare because it's shrunk-to-fit the browser window size. But you can increase the quality a great deal when you save it.
Mapshare link I used:
MapShare window small
When I looked at a map on mapshare and had the window small, the picture was small. I right-click, saved, and it was a 182k png. It was 470x350 pixels in size, and as sharp as it could be.
MapShare window maximized
I had the mapshare window almost maximized on my 1152x864 screen. I right-click saved. It was a 438kb png. Remember--this is the same picture. When I opened it up on my computer (not in the Internet browser), it was a good quality, easy to read 855x641 pixel picture. It was easier to read and larger than the Mapshare picture was on the screen.
So yes, you can save it. And the quality goes up.
Here's my post on how DeLorme could improve mapshare.
