BT-20 Supports Topo USA 8.0?

Postby CowboySlim » Thu Dec 03, 2009 2:30 pm

Background:
My son-in-law recently purchased a laptop, loves it and is encouraging me to get one (I do not have one).
If I had one, I would certainly accessorize it with an Earthmate GPS LT-40 or BT-20 to work in conjuction with Topo USA 8.0.
I notice that there is currently a good special on the BT-20 and I would prefer the convenience of wireless connectivity using one of these gizmos:
http://www.meritline.com/mini-type-wire ... 26876.aspx
http://www.meritline.com/mini-wireless- ... 27752.aspx

Website Observations:
However, when I look here I notice the explicit functional tie-in between the LT-40 and Topo USA 8.0:
http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeC ... tion=10091
OTOH, when I look at the corresponding page for the BT-20, there is no mention of Topo USA 8.0 whatsoever:
http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeC ... tion=10092

Primary Questions:
1. Does the BT-20 support Topo 8.0 in an fashion equivalent to the LT-40 but the website information fails to include that functionality?
2. Or, the BT-20 is functionally different in a comparative sense and it does not work in conjunction with Topo 8.0?

Rhetorical Questions:
If the BT-20 cannot work in conjunction with Topo 8.0, I am curious as to why not?
Such is a rhetorical question as regardless of the answer, the answer does not lead me to one course of action over another.
(I would just buy the LT-40, regardless of the why not.)
1. Is it because the RF interface of the BT-20 does not support Topo 8 specific data transmission and it was a design decision to keep the RF and USB functional interfaces equivalent?
2. Or, the internal functionality of the BT-20 is different and it cannot support Topo 8 specific requirements.

As much as I don't like wires strung out all over the place, I like bluetooth less. Besides the fact that you have to charge the thing (BT-20) from time to time. Or you can leave it plugged in while in your Jeep. Oops, there is another wire. My dos centavos.

That's a good point, Buz. I would probably leave the BT-20 connected by wire to keep it charged, regardless.
Muchas gracias.

Are you getting whole picture on BT 20? I would be Very curious.
Need SA2010 for my desk top. But sure would like to have BT 20 with my new ASUS netbook and of course need an external dvd.
Will need Topo USA 8.0 eventually.
Also like those download pics libraries.
Rereading all your stuff altho I think last night in my sleep I read it and came to a negative conclusion for my use.
thanks for asking all the right questions.
now if Delorme and ASUS would each just give us the whole picture.
Tnx

Do not buy the Meritline Bluetooth dongles. They are not compatable. I have both of them. I fought this problem for a long time. Thet are the older Bluetooth specs. They are only good for cellphones. I finally solved my problem when I bought a Cirago BTA-3210 from Newegg for only $15.
I use it on Topo 7 and SA2010. I use it on Win 7, 64 bit and Win XP Pro machines.
