Just had about a 20 minute conversation with them.

(list) pricing for the "Full Monty" (her expression) is $1895, discounted to $895 for owner/operators.
Demo versions of BOTH the basic and "Full Monty" are on their way to me.
We discussed my uses/needs/wants, basically I can keep what I want by buying the license codes at the end of the trial period - or not.

I feel their attitude is towards SELLING me what I want/need, not just "That's what we have, take it or leave it".

um... are you talking about the Full Monty being PCMiler or CoPilot???
PM me please to tell me what exactly was included as this forum thread should not continue to be on PCMiler or CoPilot.

My demo copy has got a long beard and was limited, so I'd be interested in getting a new demo copy.

It's nice to know they've improved their attitude towards o/o's cause it used to be "take it or leave it" Guess I really got them to understand they were thumbing their nose at a large market out here.

GPS for trucking

Postby milicentart » Sat Apr 12, 2008 1:01 am

Hi, I am truck driver and have been using DeLorme's gps Earthmate GPS 2008 LT 20 for about a week now. I called to register it and was offered an upgrade on atlas and have noticed that it has been shipped to me. I am hoping that the new LT 40 is included in this upgrade since it seems like it would be a better then LT 20, it would be a bummer if I don't get it since I just purchased LT 20 i should have waited.

Thus far I am pleased with the system It hasn't been perfect. I have been routed into dead end street and narrow roads (in TX). I haven't been stuck, because of course I always double check with my directions and use Rand McNally Trucking Atlas which also gives me all kinds of info on clearances and road restrictions state by state. I don't know how through it is but so far I haven't had any major problems.

I would like to use my LT 20 GPS unit with MS Streets but the Streets, would not recognize it when I do GPS search, since it is looking at the port com3 and not a usb port.

DeLorme has nice features and I can't wait for the upgrade. I like the fact that it has Wal Marts listed. It is too bad that POI don't include Truck Stop option especially since they seem to be on the map. It would be nice and I would like to try to record the weight stations but how to save that information and be able to share it? If anyone can explain it to me I would be appreciative.

There is a GPS touch screen for trucking available that has been only recently out on the market and it has good reviews. It is marketed by Teletype.com

The price is reasonable, but I can't see me spending $399 for 3.5 or $599 for 7" screen what i have been doing with $10 atlas, which costs me nothing since I used my Pilot fuel points and got a last years version. I also have mobile internet connection and can access Google Maps that is very through with streets and town maps and has business listings and phone no. It does not tell me where I am though like GPS can, which is nice.

I have been talking to my GPS and even with the truck noise it can read me well when i raise the recognition level to 5. If I have radio on the talk show, it does get confused and beeps a lot, then i cut the mike off but can still hear navigations, directions on my headset.

So far I am having fun with it. And I like big screen view on my laptop, which sits on top of my passenger seat.

I've been rambling, time to stop, Oh, about whole food stores they are like an endangered species, almost extinct. I like to suggest, Trader Joe's which carries lot of pretty good stuff and is very environmentally friendly. Again Google is good to use to locate stores. I copy and paste street addresses into destination window. Good night, :) Milica

When they ship you an upgrade, are you paying for it or is it free?
Did they say it would come with a gps?

The LT-20 is a good GPS.

I didn't know there were any narrow roads in TX. What has always amazed me in TX was the wide shoulders on 2-lane highways.

The only thing I haven't been able to get into Street Atlas is the Truck road restrictions. I've found it to be really user friendly, and most professional drivers know a lot of the restricted roads, parkway restrictions, and know to look for the road signs warning of low overpasses, etc. ahead. When you have an air card and can get google from your cell phone, as more drivers are doing every day, you have an excellent way to doublecheck the DeLorme map datum.

The fix for your LT-20 to use it with MS S&T is EASY!
Go online to DeLorme.com and download their Serial Port Emulator. When you set up the emulator, you may have a window where you'll have to tell it to provide NEMA data to the comports.

This will create three virtual (fake) comports for GPS output and you can run your LT-20 with Street Atlas at the same time as you run S&T and you simply pick one of the com ports that the emulator set up to have the gps data put into S&T.

The truck stops are in the 2008 POI, but only as gas stations. All truck stops are also gas stations. If I remember correctly, I think they corrected that in 2009 version.

Teletype's gps looks a bit like TomTom!

We enjoyed your comments on talking to your GPS and truck noise. It made us smile. Our monitor is in the front passenger seat as well now that I'm not on the truck.

Have fun with it. Let us know if you have any other concerns.

Large Motorhomes Share Some of Your Problems

Postby lkentn » Sun Apr 13, 2008 4:44 pm

Many of the things you worry about as an OTR driver we who drive larger Diesel pusher motorhomes share with you. Getting stuck on dead end roads, or narrow roads (even in Texas) and the search for a Flying J truck stops are all shared problems. I am watching this new version of SA with the new receiver as a possible solution but I too wish all of the truck stops were located on the maps for me without me downloading the draw files from the Discovery owners web site at: http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfolinks.htm. They have all of the TA, Loves, and Flying J truck stop .an1 draw files for download there.

Stay safe out there!

Kent

I've always said that RVers in motorhomes and pulling the larger RV's have basically the same needs as truckers. I'm glad you found the info on the Discovery Owners website. It's more complete than the POI in SA, but I must say that Street Atlas is much improved over a couple of years ago.

The new version of SA is great, but I HOPE you have SA200x PLUS as that's got the phone data that both RVers and truckers need. I don't recommend SA200x to RVers; they should ALL get SA200x PLUS !!!

I'll have to look into the new GPS and see what's changed.
I got the PN-20 gps to use here on the farm, and I run both topo and SA here.

I purchased the last version as Plus so I will purchase this version without the phone book but I do want the new receiver. We wave at truckers and flash them with our ICC flasher when it is safe for them to return to our lane when they are passing us. Thanks for the courtesy so many of you show us motorhomers towing our cars.

Kent,

As a current owner of SA200x Plus, you can get the new version of the program at a reduced "upgrade" price. Before you change to SA200x you should talk to someone at DeLorme, or ask Dan Lawyer to tell you the differences between the two versions.

The phone data is NOT the only difference. The SA200x version is limited compared to the Plus version in numerous ways. You need to know ALL the differences in order for you to make the best decision.

I don't have SA200x any more so I can't tell you the differences, but Dan works with both versions and may know it all off the top of his head.

I'm going to look into buying the gps without the program since I already have the upgrade for SA2009 Plus in yesterday's mail.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Nedra, but DeLorme decided that my head was getting CRS, so they created a webpage to keep me honest. Now I just post the link :?
http://www.delorme.com//images/comparis ... lasusa.htm

If you can use any of the stuff at the top, it's very well worth the difference. Another thing to keep in mind, is that the Plus version contains way more business than are in the POIs, and businesses of every kind.

As with the Yellow Pages, they are sometimes hard to figure out what category they are in, what keyword(s) to use, but the less specific you get, the more hits you get, and by browsing the business name, your much more apt to see what you want or need. Even the POIs that come with the the regular version (same ones as in the Plus version), are often in strange categories. You just have to play with keywords, in both cases.

More importantly, look down the list and you'll see 4 million POIs. Now, look at the Plus version that has 150 million residential and business address. Even after you remove all the residential records, which of course will be way more.

Doing a city search in Temple, TX using the Find keyword "business"
SA POI database has 770

Doing a Business search using the Phone Data (unique option eliminates business in multiple categories, a YP trick to get seen more) SA Plus phone data has 3393

You may not use it often, but when you need it, you've got it. That alone traveling in an RV is well worth $20.

Not to mention the ability to put web-links, and hard drive links to scanned magazine articles about places we want to see, and photos we've take at places, right on the map, so all I have to do is click it, to see it. That's too cool IMHO

Ok, I'm getting carried away...sorry.

While in Los Angeles a week ago, I used the Phone feature in SA2008+ to search for "nearby" Sears stores. Multiple Yellow Pages Categories were not deselected. To my surprise, most of the category listings for Sears did not contain addresses, but the Automobile Department and one or two others typically did. FWIW.

Dear "never lost" Steve...

I'm confused. Your jpg indicates it's XData, which you can share with anyone using SA200x Plus. What's the file extension on your files?

Files easily shared:
any data files you've saved or exported to .txt format
any data files you've saved or exported to .csv format
any files you've created as DeLorme Draw Files or route files.

These will have the data...
BUT... did you create these all on your own?
Did you know that there are some of the same data files at the Discovery Owners website? They also have files for Walmart, Sams Club and other places the RVers go to, as well as many of the truck stop groups.

You can upload your files to Discovery Owners website.
Did you ever ask the moderator for DeLorme's forum to create a section for sharing files?

Please to share trucking related DeLorme files

Postby csmgj » Tue Feb 24, 2009 10:07 am

Well DrumTrucker, I created a web space to share my files. Kinda disappointed that I haven't had many hits. The layed I have for the major truck stops isn't as nice as yours, so I'd love to include your file on my web site, and would love for my files to be downloaded and shared where ever. One special feature of my files is something I call trucker notes. Not the best organized, but includes any information I can find that would be pertinent for me as a driver. Especially places to park. You'd be amazed at the restaurants, gravel lots, and other places you can park a truck. Please check it out and let me know what you think:
http://web-sc.com/truckgps/
BTW, I got, and share, a lot of the information on POI-Factory.com. Thanks.

Well, it's nice that you created a webspace to share your files. I'm surprised you didn't simply upload them to the Discovery website, which is so well known. While it was started for RVers, truckers have very similar needs to RVers, so there are already many files there for download.

They don't have the odd places you can park at their website, however, I believe. Drumtrucker's note was almost a year old when you posted.

I agree, there should be more provision for truckers:
1. Bridge height/weight limits
2. Avoid dirt roads
