Will Topo 5.0 work with the new GPS-PN20?

Postby snow_rules » Mon Feb 12, 2007 12:16 pm

I just ordered the new PN20 and wondering if it will work with Topo 5.0. If so what settings should be used?

You ordered the PN-20 as a stand-alone, or with the software?

If it was with the software, you will get Topo 6 pn.

Otherwise, I believe you will be able to send NMEA navigation data to Topo 5 using the PN-20 serial driver on the DeLorme website. That's probably it.

Even Topo 6 had to be updated to work with the PN-20, and since Topo 5 is older than 6, I see no reason for DeLorme to update it.

As far as I know, DeLorme isn't (yet) selling the PN-20 as a stand-alone unit, so your purchase most likely included the updated Topo 6 (labeled as "PN" on the DVDs). My understanding is that if for some reason you want to continue to use Topo 5, you can still have it & 6 installed side-by-side, but don't run them at the same time. They both want to access the files in DeLorme Docs, and don't share well.

If you uninstall Topo 5, all your saved work in C:\DeLorme Docs is not removed & can be used in Topo 6.

I did get the package that has Topo 6.0 but since I have 2 laptops I was thinking of installing the Topo 6.0 on the 2nd laptop and keeping the 5.0 version on the other.

Same question: Will Topo 5.0 work with the new GPS-PN20?

Postby PAhiker33 » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:12 pm

"Will Topo 5.0 work with the new GPS-PN20?"

I am looking into buying a used PN-20 that does not include Topo USA 6.0, but I already have Topo USA 5.0 on my computer. I read through this thread but didn't see any definitive answer of whether 5.0 will work with the PN-20. Any word on this?

Thanks - Brad.

I would not buy a PN-20 without Topo7 INCLUDING the three (3) Region DVDs containing precut detailed maps.

Agreed, and if you purchased your pn-20 from an authorized dealer and it came with Topo 6, Delorme will, as I recall, upgrade you at no cost to Topo 7. This is assuming you purchased it within the last 30-60 days. I should state that this is my recollection and you would obviously need confirmation from Delorme.
