How to get the USB interface to work?

Postby milos6058 » Thu May 05, 2005 10:24 pm

I just tried the new update of topo5 with my Garmin GSPmap60CS. I can select the garmin/garmin with usb under the gps tab. When try downloading a track file it goes through the motions of working including the gps beeping that the download is done. The problem is, topo5 keeps the activity monitor going, showing no progress what so ever. Finally, after a minute or two, the program locks up and windows shuts it down. Any ideas as to what's wrong?

Same problem first time I tried to use it, but it works fine now that I have rebooted the system.

I can't seem to get it work either. It keeps crashing on me. FWIW, I'm using a Garmin GPSmap 60CS, FW 3.8.

Just to but in. I had a heck of a time getting my GPSMAP60 to work, but it is working now. My biggest problem was getting the Garmin USB drivers installed correctly. When it is, it shows up in Device Manager as Garmin USB GPS. Then (for example) to recieve tracks, set Delorme to Garmin/Garmin - USB.

The Problem I am having is that once I acquire the track into Topo 5 some of it is okay with all of the points and lines then the points spread way out and the track looses all of the detail. Is there a limit to the number of points a track can have? Any other ideas?

1 fix on open problem, others still there over a year later

Postby Dr Bob » Tue May 10, 2005 12:19 am

They did finally fix a problem that forced you to view GPS settings before exchange if you used com port other than #1.

They did not fix:
Will fail if you try to transfer routes early or late in alphabet
if you have > 18 or so routes. The only ones that work
are in the middle. Seems to fail if it has to wait too
long after early ones finish or for late ones to start.

Still overwrites comments with repeated waypoint name.
This is so infuriating! I spend time entering them and they
are tossed. They were entered to aid the user.

Looks like they still want/expect you to own other software to
manage routes/waypoints/tracks.

Truncated Tracks

Postby WW » Sat May 14, 2005 8:15 pm

I am having what seems to be the exact same problem as kpanic. Just loaded the Topo USA 5.0 SP1. Pushing routes & directions APPEARS to work ok.

But, pulling a track down, whether as a draw file, trail, road--whatever, seems to "reverse" truncate the track: only a handful of the first few hundred trackpoints are picked up (this is random, since multiple attempts seem to achieve differing results), but the last 100 or so trackpoints come through perfectly.

Oddly, when you initiate the transfer, the GPS unit indicates "Transfer Complete" almost immediately, but the activity monitor (progress bar goes on for 30-40 seconds and starts working up from 0%. At about 27% the progress bar goes away and and the software indicates it was a successful transfer.

I have National Geo Topo 4.0 and the Garmin MapSource 6.5 and both transfered this 745 point track log perfectly.

USB connectivity to Garmin StreetPilot-2610

Postby Sakane » Tue May 24, 2005 10:54 am

I've read the treads and no mention of Garmin's SP-2610.

Is DeLorme working on the USB interface to Garmin's StreetPilot-2610? Topo-5 apparently see's the SP-2610 device but, never actually downloads the data (satellite or track info).

By the way, SP-2610 is factory set for Garmin/Garmin input/output and is not configurable to NMEA.

I would really like to see the SP-2610 work with Topo-5.

Good Job!

Postby Michael_dbaII » Mon Jun 13, 2005 12:29 am

Glad to hear about the USB driver development. I have used my Garmin GPSMAP 60C and can say it works pretty well. The transfer bar graphic is out of sync, but, it does transfer my waypoints correctly. The tracks are not quite there yet...it only transfers about 10% of them, so the transferred track does not accurately display...but hey, it's still better than no USB support! Glad to see you guys are listening and working on it. Keep up the good work.

Service Pack 2 was posted yesterday, and in my initial testing, it appears to have resolved all of the issues.
