Can't run topo 5

Postby txfieros » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:23 pm

In the past I would just installed Topo USA 5.0 and I'd get a menu in the Start Menu. I could run the program without the disk installed and it would run but only a generic map until I inserted the DVD then it would bring up the topo stuff.

I tried installing it today after not using it in some time, and I just get a folder under Program files that contains a bunch of data files but no EXE file to run. I don't remember when I bought this it having two disks. In fact I remember I was always mad because I had to run the DVD for it to read the DATA. Now it seems like I have the data on the HDD but no program to run this.

What happened?
Did it come with two disks???
I know what I'm doing with this stuff as I used to work on computers for a living, but maybe I'm just overlooking something simple and my mind went into vapor lock.

I have Topo 5.0 and it is on several CD's. One is the program disks and the others are region disks. You can load the data disks to your hard drive so you don't have to keep the CD in your drive all the time.

After you load the program disk, you can then insert the data disk, go to the .exe program on the CD and it will prompt you to load it on the local drive.

I don't understand.

You only have one CD/DVD?
What does your one CD say?

I don't recall, but one said Data and the other said "Program" or "Install"

Obviously, you need both disks to run fully.

Glad you cleared that up, I was fixing to check to see if Topo 5 came on a DVD, I didn't think it did.

Edit.... Topo 5.0 did have a DVD option.....I just confirmed it.

You don't have to uninstall the data if in fact that's what you installed. Just install the program, and then in the Map File tab, click on Add and then Data Locations. You should be able to add the folder on your HD that you installed the Region data to, and it will use that data. Make sure you go to the DeLorme website and download and run all updates for the program before you start using it.

You should also consider getting Topo 7.0 when it comes out this fall. 5.0 will be 4 years old and very out of date, program and data wise.

Thanks to your replies I remembered that when I recently used Topo after I moved it was already installed on my comptuer so all I used was the data disk.... which doesn't even say DATA. I looked through one of 3 boxes i still have with unpacked stuff from over a year ago and I found the install disk.

Thanks for jogging my memory.
