Downloading separate tracks

Postby john077 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:51 pm

How can you download separate track files from a Garmin etrex legend cx, so that they show up on the map as seperate tracks. If I select to download "all" or if I download each track by itself by name, they all show up on the map as a single track :?:

Did you try the the pulldown box when it asks you "which track?"

Unfortuatnly, it's a number and that's hit or miss as what order tracks are displayed is different from their assigned track number. (ex: if the GPS has tracks 1, 2, and 3 inside, then you delete track #2, I don't think your GPS will auto-renumber the positions nor will it leave a blank space in the track list).

So I found it easier just to download all tracks, then select and delete the ones I didn't want.

What I had did is saved each track and named it "track A, B, C, D", after I saved each track I went in and deleted the track log file and then started a new track. When I downloaded them I did like "Track C" but when it put it on the map it had combined all the tracks as one

So you did download them one at a time, and they all came in separate?

Then you downloaded another track C to overwrite the first track C, and instead of downloading it just combined all your tracks?

I have no idea why.

Yes I downloaded 4 separate tracks titled "Track A, B, C & D" one at a time, and then when I open anyone of them in the program it shows all the tracks as one, and if you try and find the points, they show the entire 4 tracks points, so you can't break them. I can download them into the "Mapsource" mapping program and it does make them all separate tracks, but can't use the Mapsource program as it does not have "aerials" available.

I have tried shutting off my GPS unit and restarting it, and even deleting the track log after each track, but no luck. Am thinking it has to be in the DeLorme program as it works ok with the Mapsource program.

Did you stop after each individual download to verify it was downloading one at a time, and not just downloading them all at once, four times?

As said earlier, I just downloaded them all. Some GPS tracks connected end to end, when I used other GPS's it left a gap between when I had a start and stop of the GPS.

Thumbing through some of the topics, and seen this one, You may have already figured it all out already.
Try as you may there is no way of downloading idvidual tracks from GPS to the Topo5. I've tried and wished you could.
What I do is download the tracks, and then go to draw file and trace over the track I want. I then right click on the tracks I downloaded edit, and deleate.

For this post

* Track Set = one or more tracks saved as a group. If you turn your GPS on and off 8 times before your active log fills up, you have a Track Set of 8 individual tracks saved in one Track Log

* Track Log = a memory position that stores Track Sets. Read only. Usually saved from the Active Track, although you can 'push' a track set into a track log with a software program.

* Active Track = the track log that records tracks when the GPS is on.

Some clarification:

- You absolutely can not download individual tracks within a Track Log or the Active Track. There's no way to select individual tracks. While you could write an algorighm to download the log, look for starts and stops, and then only save the one you wanted, I've never seen any gps/software combo that could do that.

- You can, with some GPSr/Software combinations, download track sets from GPSr memory. This is complicated as the way the names are displayed on screen may be alphabetical or in order saved, not necessarily in the order they exist in GPS memory.

That's been my experience.
