Working with linked attribute sets

Is there a method to merge the fields in a linked attribute set into the layer it is linked to? I'm running into some issues working with layers that have a linked set (such as entering a value for a new object record into the attribute which is a FK for the linked set). Honestly, I don't want to manage any data as a linked set; I'm only using as a kludge to append new data to existing records. I'd rather permanently update the layer table with the linked data set.
