Show Topo data?

Postby SebagoLakeRanch » Sat Mar 20, 2010 10:21 pm

I played around with the trial for a month, and bought XMap 7 Editor today, I installed the Topo disc that came with it, but I can't seem to see the Topo data. I de-selected all the other layers but don't see the topo data. What am I doing wrong?

I just opened up XMap again, I forgot to mention that the following error pops ups, looking a little closer the second one is obviously the problem.

I didn't get any errors when I ran the trial for XMap Enterprise.

Looks like a mix between needing to run it in Administrator mode, and possibly some controls didn't load during install.

First, try running it as an Administrator (right-click on shortcut, and select 'Run As Administrator..' - see if that helps at all.)

I don't know what I did, don't think I did anything, but the above errors aren't showing up anymore. The Topo data works fine if I put the disc in. When I installed Xmap I did the install for the topo disc as well. The folder is on my computer, C:\Program Files (x86)\DeLorme\XMap USA Topographic Data 2009. There are also sub folder for all the regions. To make it more confusing, I opened up Map Data>Data>Base Data and the above folder for Topo Data is on there. It works with the disc in the drive, doesn't work without the disc in the drive, it is in fact on my computer, and listed under Base Data. So, how do I get it to work like it's supposed to and not have to use the disc.

That's why. With Vista/Win7's new 'UAC' - user access control, programs can't normally read/write to the Program Files directory. Why it's working the way you describe is because the base data has locations to the CD-ROm, and your installed directory in \Program Files. When running it, the program checks the \Program Files (which errors), and then checks the CD-ROM drive.

To fix it, either turn off UAC, or right-click on the shortcut and enable the program to run in administrator mode. Or, uninstall the Topo Data, and install it somewhere outside of \Program Files.

Cheers,
Mike.

Turning off UAC didn't fix the problem without uninstalling. Before doing that I tried one thing. I opened up the base layer option, de-selected the Topo option, then re-selected it. It worked. I turned UAC back on, rebooted and tried it again. It worked. So the easiest solution is to go to the base layer, de-select then re-select the option.

BTW, if you right click the XMap shortcut, there is no option for "Run as Administrator" like there is with Topo 7 that I have installed.

On my Win 7 install, right click the XMap icon on on the desktop, click Properties, then click on the "Compatibility" tab. "Run as administrator" is about three quarters of the way down.
