Hi.
I decided that for $10 I'd give Cache Register a shot on my MacBook Pro. Up to now, I've just been loading caches from Topo8 running on a VM image. However, the promise of easy (easier?) cache management lured me into trying CR out. Immediately, I have run into two big issues.
First of all, I tried to load 2 PQs onto my device. To do this, I first removed all cache listings from my device except my solved puzzle caches, which aren't covered by the PQs, anyway. Then, I fired up the widget and connected my PN-20, entered all my information, selected the desired PQ and hit Sync. Figuring this would take a while (s l o o o w USB interface, ugh), I went about my business. A few seconds later, I noticed the PN-20 was no longer in "USB Transfer" mode. I flipped back to the dashboard widget and see that only ~130 of the ~450 caches were loaded onto the unit. Grumble, grumble, grumble. I had to hit Sync no fewer than 10 times to get all the caches from my 2 PQs onto my device. This isn't exactly useful, nor confidence inspiring.
The next thing I was curious about was how CacheRegister handled waypoints associated with cache listings (I've never really used them), so I went and took a look at the waypoint listing, noted the closest waypoint name and then switched over to the cache listing (GC1NE8A) on the PN-20. Well, the cache listing begins in the middle of the 2nd log entry (from fizzymagic), which isn't terribly useful.
Finally, one thing I noticed was that I could always tell if the sync operation completed successfully or not. After both sync operations that finished off their respective PQ, the PN-20 updated the list of caches at which I was looking. However, on all the other aborted tries, the cache listing did not update even though there were new caches on the unit.
It was a interesting waste of time, but I'm not really feeling like I got $10 worth out of this. Back to just using TOPO8, I guess, and DeLorme gets a $10 donation and some "free" QA.
