Finding a Street Address

Postby N4AOF » Sun Sep 11, 2011 2:35 pm

Has anyone figured out any way to get Street Atlas to find a street address without connecting a GPS and driving to the location?
:?

Way back in Street Atlas 7, it was simple - go to the search box, type in the address, and SA would display a map with that address centered and marked. With each new version since then, this simple task seems to have become more and more difficult, but with SA2009 it seems to have been eliminated completely.
:(

After SA2009 finally starts, you can try the Find tab, but if you enter a street address, the program absolutely refuses to even try to locate it. SA2009 will show me areas where the phone number area code matches the first three digits of the street address or occasionally suggest that I ought to be browsing for something else somwhere else -- but it seems completely unable to parse a simple street address.

Are you using an English language version of Windows set to USA regional settings for time, currency, etc?

Even if you have the required OS set to the required settings, suggest that you go to Delorme.com and plow down through the Support Knowledge base for SA2009 anyway for hints on the type of problem you are experiencing.

I just did a street search with SA2009. It may be the format you are using.

SA requires the address to be in a certain format for it to understand. The format is:

Street address "," City "," State "," and Zip Code

The commas are mandatory with NO extra commas.

A short cut I use is to put in the Street Address, Zipcode (no city or state). This is what I just did and had no problem. The only time I have a problem is if the program does not have the data for the location of the address I am looking for OR has the address info that is incorrect. On occasion (such as my house) the zip code information will be incorrect. Oh, I now use Topo 9 and it has the exact same problem for my house.

Leaving off the zip code may help, although a search of all zip codes in a large city could take a while.

I would just budget a nickle a day and order a copy of SA2011 to be done with it.

Edit: SA2009 was released in the Spring of 2008 and reportedly was not a vintage version when compared to SA2008 or SA2011.

Edit2: The cause of the SA2009 "Find" issue popped into my head in a moment of boredom. It was not a Zip Code issue, but a little bit of PN-20itis, if I now remember correctly. Although the issue was reported early on, the cause did not get posted on the SA2009 forum until quite a few months later.

Once again, suggest just getting a copy of SA2011 and forgetting about it.

Or try installing SA2009 SP2

John, actually since I live in a suburb of Atlanta, changing the zip code also changes the city name. The only way to find my house's true location would be to use just the street address at zoom level of 11 or closer. If I am zoomed in that close, I probably know the location anyway.
