How can I convert a GPS log into a road/trail?

Postby Chuck » Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:47 am

I have some property which is not mapped in the program, but I want to add roads/trails using a GPS log.
How can I take the breadcrumb trail and convert it into a road?

It's a two-step process...

  • First, draw a track from the GPS file: Draw tab -> File button -> Import button -> navigate to the GPS Logs folder, select the file, click Open, click Done

  • Second, turn the track into a Routable road: Right-click on the newly created line -> Manage Draw sub-menu -> select Copy to Active Road Layer
Clean-up will include deleting the track (that is the line itself; the road will remain), and making sure at least one end-point connects to an existing road so you can route to your new road from "the outside world."

    Chuck,
Xapie answered your question as asked, but let me add a thought. If you download the color ariel photography for your area, you can see where to draw the roads in. That's a different way of drawing routable roads on your property and is the means I use. I have logging roads all over our 130 acre farm due to logging it to open areas as pastureland for cattle. So... some I draw as roads and others I draw in as tracks or trails.

Another thing you can do is also get Topo. A lot depends on what you are trying to do and your reason for drawing in the roads and trails, etc.

The ariel photography is a valuable help, and they now have a 1 year subscription for $29.95 which I think is quite reasonable. Any ariel photography you download for SA2009+ can also be used in Topo.
I LOVE Delorme's programs & helping people learn to use them.
I hope I've helped you! Please pass the favor on & help someone out too! ;-)
